Here's an older photo of my Dell PowerEdge R420 (it's been updated since). I've installed 2x Intel Xeon E5-2670 v2 processors and 96GB of DDR3 ECC memory running at 1600MT/s.
For storage, there are 3x Seagate 12TB HDDs, configured in RAID-Z1, which provides one disk of redundancy and 24TB of usable space. I've also added a 256GB NVMe cache SSD to improve array performance.
Finally, there's an NVIDIA Quadro K2200 GPU installed—for some reason. (I don't know, it might come in handy at some point.)
Here, I'll be posting stuff about my homelab! I'll do my best to update as I do things, and document my activites well. Hopefully, you might even learn something!
Networking overhaul! I replaced my 24-port Cisco switch with two Enterasys B5G124-24P2 switches, linked together using their link cable. This eliminates my need (for now) for a patch panel to manage wiring on the front and back of the rack. I also added that bottom machine, which is just running Debian on bare metal for me to experiment with.
That machine is nothing special, it's really quite ancient. It has two Intel Xeon E5630 processors and 88GB of RAM (adding one more stick makes the whole thing stop working and I have no idea why 🤷). It also has a 4TB RAID array, though nothing fancy.
Still waiting for Verizon to come so I can deploy my OPNsense router. That’ll be super cool.
I've begun the planning stage of a new project! I am going to be building a router for my house to replace the decade-plus old Verizon Fios router that's in place now. Parts are on the way, and if all goes well, it should be operational by the end of the month. This will result in a large remodeling of my home network.
iXSystems still hasn't updated TrueNas Scale to fix this completely unintuitive and terrible graph. This used to work fine until about a month or so ago. Eagerly awaitng an update as I hate looking at this.
Memory belonging to CPU 1 threw an error relating to voltage levels. Re-seated and re-pasted processors as the old thermal compound had dried significantly in a relatively short period of time. Will look into other alternatives. PTM-7950?
